Hayashi Chujiro, (1870-1940) how did he die?

Post by chi_solas on Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:20 am

Hayashi Chujiro, (1870-1940) was a Japanese Navel Officer and surgeon. He put Usui's teachings into a repeatable system of hand positions and symbols so that it could be more easily taught and used. He opened the first commercial clinic in Tokyo in the early 1930's. He committed hari-kari in 1940 rather than fight in WW II. He passed his teachings onto Hawayo Takata.

I read in Helen Haberly's "Hawayo Takata's Story"
that Dr. Hayashi transitioned. That makes more sense
    to me. sunny

In "Iyashino Gendai-Reiki Ho" (Modern Method for Reiki Healing) by Hiroshi Doi, it is mentioned the following on page 185:

"Hayashi, Chujiro did not want to go to war again. He told his will to his family, he left the last instruction to others, and Hayashi committed suicide by cutting his internal organs by his mind force without using any edged tool."

According to 'Light on the Origins of Reiki' by Tadao Yamaguchi, whose family knew Chujiro Hayashi and his wife Chie Hayashi personally:

Many people wonder if he committed hara-kiri as reported in some books. Actually, it is true that he killed himself, but it was an honourable death. He had gone to Hawaii in the critical period just before war broke out. For a high-ranking ex-navy officer it was a very risky thing to do. He must have been aware of the risk but he was so determined that he went ahead. When the Japanese navy authority called on him to give information about Hawaii before Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, he did not cooperate. Knowing that he would not escape without severe punishment, which would have had a major effect on his family, he chose an honourable death.

This explanation sounds very likely as the "severe punishment" may have meant being executed following a court-martial for treason, which would have brought much shame on his family.

The actual details of his "honourable death" are known by most students of Jikiden Reiki as they were eventually shared by Chie Hayashi with of Tadao's aunts, who was very close to Mrs Hayashi, many years after Chujiro's death. Although his death was honourable, it was not hara-kiri nor was it done with pure "mind force".

Who's your quote from Bridget? It doesn't sound like the way Helen wrote her biography.

That is the first explanation I have read that actually resonates with some truth. Not all, but some.

    practitioner would follow. sunny

Colin: what does it say on page 69 of Tadao's book you earlier quoted? Does it mention how he died, or just say he died? I havn't read any of his books, so don't know myself. thanks in advance.

    warmest wishes
    Wayne

Considering that you haven't read any of his books and the fact that I didn't mention the page number I was quoting from I am very impressed that you knoew it was indeed page 69 of Tadao's book I was quoting from! affraid

Unfortunately, Tadao does not give any more details about how Chujiro Hayashi died but he gives more detail at his seminars, if asked. Since it is not in his book, I don't feel happy mentioning them here - particularly since I have now been accepted to do Shihan Kaku (Assistant Teacher) next month.

As you know, though, Mrs Takata, says he self-induced 3 strokes and said he would die when the 3rd one came. This is not what Tadao says Chie Hayashi told his aunt though, several years after his death.

Incidentally, the strangest account of Chujiro Hayashi's death I have heard was that he was run over by a tram in Tokyo! I heard this at a Japanese Reiki Techniques workshop in 2000, but I don't remember where this story had come from! Neutral
