I am poking the Hindu scriptures, looking for a timeline, etc,. We have story books in India talking about Sages and "wise ones' sitting under a village banyan tree and 'curing' people of illnesses. May be they were just practicing some kind of Reiki and nobody knew it.

"Reiki" is the word used for spiritual energy. It is NOT the name of what Usui-sensei taught.

The Japanese word "Reiki" (coming from Chinese "Ling Chi") doesn't refer to just any kind of spiritual energy. It is something very specific.
Reiki, from the perspective of Usui-sensei's teachings, is the energy originating from the highest consciousness. It is the most highly refined and subtlest energy. It is "the Light", containing all possible energy frequencies (the entire spectrum of energies). It is the energy radiated by enlightened people.

In this respect I would not dare to claim I work or meditate with Reiki......

Anyway, as there have always been people who reached the higher levels of spiritual development (higher levels of awareness).. Reiki has always been there.
And since discovering that one can help others by laying on hands is a natural part of spiritual development, there have always been people who used Reiki (= The Light) in what we would call a treatment.


"Reiki" is about a specific energy. "Reiki healing" would be healing in which this energy (Reiki/The Light) is involved.
It doesn't matter what method is used, as long as The Light (Reiki/Ling Chi) is used. (Then again, if you're at the level of being one with the Great Bright Light (which is Reiki), there is no need for specific methods or rituals any more.)
