    Jewish Hatsurei Ho?

Post by Colin on Tue Mar 02, 2010 1:14 am

    Hi All

I just came across this description of a Jewish Healing Meditation and I was struck by the similarity between this method and Hatsurei Ho.

Meditation: Becoming a Vessel of Light

Take a few minutes to relax and become centered by paying attention to your breath...notice any tensions, tightness or holdings in your body and just allow yourself to deepen into a state of relaxation, allowing yourself to breath effortlessly...With each in-breath imagine that you are breathing in the divine out-breath and with each out-breath imagine that you are sending your breath back to its source in the divine...

Now imagine that above your head flows a river of white light, flowing from the heavens down to the crown of your head where it enters your body and begins to fill you with light, filling every organ and indeed every cell of your body with radiance and warmth, bringing healing energy to your entire body and your entire being.....As this light fills you, see yourself as a radiant and luminous being of light....Now imagine that you are also surrounded by light in all directions so that you are both filled with light and surrounded by light....

Let yourself bask in the light of the infinite, the "Or Ein Sof,"" and feel your body becoming lighter and lighter as you rest in the radiance of God's loving presence...

(Optional for healing) Now let yourself also become a channel for healing, allowing yourself to both receive and send healing energy out into the universe...You may wish to picture a person or persons to whom you wish to send healing energy....As you hold them in your mind and heart, share your light with them....Send them healing energy through the light emanating from your hands and fingertips....Let yourself both receive and send blessings for a complete healing--"refuat ha'nefesh urefuat ha'guf" --a healing of body and soul.

As you bring this meditation to a close, become aware once more of your breath and the boundaries of your body...the gentle rise and fall of your chest...become aware of your presence in the room where you are sitting and then gently open your eyes...

    (Source: http://www.sacredtherapy.com/meditate.shtml )

With each in-breath imagine that you are breathing in the divine out-breath and with each out-breath imagine that you are sending your breath back to its source in the divine...

This is very much like one of my waka!

    Breath

    As I’m breathing in
God is breathing out to me
    As I’m breathing out
God is breathing me to him
In this way we become one.

Perfect instructions for Joshin Kokyu ho!

Let yourself bask in the light of the infinite, the "Or Ein Sof,"" and feel your body becoming lighter and lighter as you rest in the radiance of God's loving presence...

A lovely description of feeling full of Reiki: "resting in the radiance of God's loving presence" sunny

Let yourself both receive and send blessings...

Sounds like a description of the translation of Reiju! Very Happy

So, was Judaism also an influence on Mikao Usui?
Was this meditation written by a Jewish Reiki practitioner?
Or, is this just another example of a universal spiritual practice?
    Very Happy

    Hi Wayne

I have sent Estelle, the author of the site, an email to ask her about where this meditation originated.

I was going to say that it sounds Cabalistic. Then I checked the link that Colin provided, and it references Kabbalah (Cabala).

Well I got a reply back from Estelle already and it is very intriguing! Suspect

    Here is her reply:

Hi Colin, Thanks for your interest...The meditation I put on my website is adapted from a kabbalistic meditation brought down in Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan's book on Jewish meditation from a medeival spanish kabbalist called R. Azriel of Gerona who wrote The Gate of Kavanah--see p. 119 in Meditation and Kabbalah by Kaplan. Glad to know we are on the same page spiritually. Best, Estelle Frankel

Unfortunately p119 is not part of the Limited Preview of that book on books.google.com so I can't find out any more at this point.

    Thanks for posting this!
    Nice to see the similarities.

I would like to add that this version seems more like the Hatsurei Hō version as taught by Hiroshi Doi to the West and by Frans/Bronwen Stiene, Frank Petter and such.
It is less similar to the Gakkai version I learned and try to practise on an daily basis. The Gakkai version does not include visualisation at any point.

Visualizing keeps the mind occupied, whereas the whole idea of the first steps of Hatsurei Hō is to get into something we could call a "pure mind" (Jōshin....).

    Hi Frank

Interesting...where did you learn the "Gakkai version" of Hatsurei? I didn't think they taught gaijin? Smile

The Jikiden version and the version in Kaiji Tomita's book, decribed here:

    http://www.reiki.net.au/copy.asp?id=HistoryPractices#hatsurei ho

also do not include visualisation at any point so these may be similar to what you were taught?

    Smile

    Hi,

I learned it from my teacher. It is the version as described by former Gakkai Shihan Fumio Ogawa (there is bad and not entirely translated version of it on the Net, my teacher however was involved in an attempt by his teacher to translate the whole book).

This version of Hatsurei Hō seems like the version Hiroshi Doi teaches.. only without the visualizing. (So you don't visualize energy coming into your crown chakra or your nose etc.)

The Hatsurei Hō version you linked doesn't seem to make use of the Seika Tanden and Gasshō Meiso Hō (in order to reach a spacial state of mind). The Gakkai version does.

During the Joshin Kyoku ho the breath (energy) is drawn into the seika tanden. Also, during seishin toitsu energy moves through the hands down the arms and into the seika tanden.

Gassho Meiso-ho is aka Gassho meditation. From my understanding (and I am sure most peoples) you focus on the point where the middle fingers come together. seishin toitsu is a different exercise.

It is interesting, do you do the Gassho meiso ho in the place of the seishintoitsu?

    Hello,

In the Gakkai version you do not visualize energy going into the seika tanden.
And in the rest of that Hatsurei Hō version you also don't visualize energy moving in through the hands with each in-breath nor energy moving out by each out-breath.
You only breathe. You do nothing. "Wei wu wei" - doing by not doing.

"Seishin Tōitsu" is a state of mind. It is not an exercise. (Although many people seem to think it's the name of the exercise... it is actually the word used to indicate what state of mind you should enter.)

This concept of Seishin Tōitsu is not unique to Usui's Reiki-hō, my teacher taught me.
You can also find this in arts like martial arts (Usui-sensei practised martial arts), Japanese flower arrangement (ikebana or kadō) and calligraphy. I once read about an exercise in Aikido that referred to this as well.

The exercise used to enter this state of mind called Seishin Tōitsu is a gasshō meditation, but the Gakkai (at least the division of former Shihan Ogawa) version does not concentrate the mind in the hands. By "being in your hands" you are not centred.
