Colin, i know - i am having the same thoughts - however i have come across these phenomenon in chigung and taoist internal alchemy and as far as i can tell at this time, it seems like just an extention to the application of reishi or for us reiki.....???

On a more serious note. James pointed out that others have suggested that Usui sensei may have studied with or been influenced by the founder of TaiReido.

On page 78, its' interesting that the founder mentions both Buddha & Jesus, and in a favourable way. Here (at least so far) it can be seen that the founder of a spiritual path which effects healing, and which has clear unmistakable similarities to Reiki (Takata sensei's absent healing technique almost verbatim!), has by his own admission lent weight to both Buddha & Jesus.

Ahem, didn't someone once mention some kinda Christian connection to Usui sensei, while others have promoted a buddhist connection? Maybe he was like Morehai Tanaka, and saw value in different aspects of both?

I think so, and he mentions them both again a few times during the book.
Absent healing, and internal action of reishi - is very reiki like. There are points in the book that seem too similar to what know as reiki. Also noticed the similarities in healing techniques (and hand positions)used for treating disease - namely palm pressure, stroking etc.
Also it talks about transmission of the power a few times. But not as attunements, but rather that one who has mastered the internal art of reishi, can give it to someone else by letting them experience the internal action of reishi...
But you can also aquire the skills by dilligent practice as outlined in the book - first external action of reishi, then internal action of reishi, and reiyu.
the treatment of habits is also very simmilar to usui-sensei´s method.

it is indeed a very interesting work.

I will keep up my study and practice of Taireido and update my impressions here for sure.
This work has indeed opened the door to some speculative thoughts i had beed carrying with reiki - based on my other studies of Chinese and Japanese energetic systems. - no conclusions just an open mind to take in these teachings in the proper manner.

Ya know what's so damn good bout this book. There's so much similarities in Taireido, when comparing to Reiki. And as Taireido predates Usui Reiki, and both founders lived so close together in towns, there surely is a strong case for Usui sensei being influenced by concepts in Taireido. directly or indirectly.

Both are different systems in their own right, but what's most exciting is that in the book on Taireido, we've got detailed first hand information from the founder. This gives us a unique insight into the general mindset of such spiritual founders, of Usui sensei's time. The potential for having a better understanding of Usui sensei's concepts, is enormous!
