Not easy to answer using a single option!

Yes, I find some such as hatsurei ho really help me feel the presence of the energy but some are not absolutely necessary and many were indeed taught in one form or another by Mrs Takata.

I don't use protocol's at all anymore. I just simply sit with the divinity.

Though I have not explored many Japanese Reiki techniques, such as taught in Gendai or Gakkai or other lineages, I would certainly recommend any interested student to explore them, in the spirit of learning other ways of presenting and expressing the basic practice of Reiki.

I agree with the previous post. They are something to explore as part of the process of growing with Reiki.

I doubt though that they're as important as having a beard.

The reference is to techniques which have been popularised, over the last 10 or so years, by various Japanese styles of Reiki, and are said to have been taught by Usui-sensei

The main ones are:
Gassho Kokyo ho - hand-breathing
Gassho Meiso - Gassho meditation
Joshin Kokyu ho - 'Spirit Cleansing Breath' (an element of hatsurei ho)
Kenyoku ho - 'dry bathing' (an element of hatsurei ho)
Makoto no Kokyo ho - breath of sincerity
Nentatsu ho - 'habit treatment'
Reiki Mawashi - the 'Reiki circle' or 'Reiki current'
Renzoku Reiki - the Reiki Marathon
Shuchu (aka Shudan) Reiki - group treatment
Gedoku Chiryo ho - detoxification/purification technique
Genetsu ho (or Byogen Chiryo ho) - for reducing high temperature / bringing down a fever
Gyoshi ho - treating with the eyes
Hatsurei ho - 'Generating the Spirit'
Heso Chiryo ho - navel treatment
Koki ho - treating with the breath
Nadete Chiryo ho - Stroking
Oshite Chiryo ho - Pressing with the fingertips
Tanden Chiryo ho / Hara Chiryo ho - hara-centred detox
Uchite Chiryo ho - Patting
Byosen Reikan ho - intuitive (psychic) sensing of imbalances
Enkaku Chiryo ho - distance treatment
Jakikiri Joka ho - clearing negative energy
Ketsueki Kokan ho (aka Ketsueki Joka ho) - the 'Reiki Finish' or 'Nerve Stroke'
and its two alternative forms:
Hanshin Koketsu ho (aka Hanshin Chiryo) - half body blood cleansing
Zenshin Koketsu ho - full body blood cleansing
Reiji ho - allowing Reiki to guide hand placement
Seiheki Chiryo ho - 'habit treatment' (Nentatsu ho, but with symbols)
Shashin Chiryo ho - distance-healing method using a photograph
Kokiyu ho - 'breath empowerment'
Reiju - 'Giving/receiving the Spirit'

[versions of several of these techniques were taught by Takata-sensei as part of Usui Shiki Ryoho (though without the Japanese names); many others are common to other Japanese therapeutic disciplines]

However, be mindful that a great many Reiki practitioners/teachers do not use any of these practices.

At least they do not use any of them in their 'Japanese form'.
As I mentioned, versions of several of these techniques are already part of Usui Shiki Ryoho - eg: Reiki Mawashi, Renzoku Reiki, Seiheki Chiryo ho, Enkaku Chiryo ho

Don't let the Japanese names fool you

Hi Guys,

Quite a few of the techniques were covered by my Komyo teacher...and I do believe they are important if you feel confident in them...I do a few of the practices...With that said, i recently met a Komyo instructor who teaches very little of this.... yet another one, who has chosen to vary from what Inamoto taught her...
