On the subject of learning English

Post by Colin on Tue Aug 03, 2010 10:56 am

    Hi All

Since there are some topics currently around about languages, I thought some non-native speakers/students of English may find this quote amusing, which I have rediscovered on my PC whilst browsing!

    I'm afraid I don't know its source:

    English Language is Absurd

    English spelling is absurd
as you inferred when first you heard
that "concurred" will rhyme with "bird"
and "interred" and even "heard" -

but not with "beard" which rhymes with "weird"
and "peered" and "cleared" and "chandeliered."

Knowing "word" you'd guess at "sword"
but have it wrong. It rhymes with "gourd"
and "snored" and "fjord" and "horde" and "hoard"
and with "abhorred" and "cribbage board" -

    English spelling undoes one
(which word itself will rhyme with "done"
and "gun" and "fun" but not with "bone"
which rhymes with "moan" and with "cologne")...

    Whatever might be its reward,
    English spelling's so untoward
    that it leaves one floored.

    Smile

Here is one from me Wink:

A leave letter to the headmaster:

“As I am studying in this school I am suffering from headache. I request you to leave me today”

“As my headache is paining, please grant me leave for the day.”
